چکیده

[1] Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) offers a unique opportunity to investigate the variability of mid‐tropospheric CO2 over the entire globe. In this paper, we use AIRS data to examine the interannual variability of CO2 and find significant correlations between AIRS mid‐tropospheric CO2 and large‐scale atmospheric dynamics. During El Niño events, mid‐tropospheric CO2 over the central Pacific Ocean is enhanced whereas it is reduced over the western Pacific Ocean as a result of the change in the Walker circulation. The variation of AIRS CO2 in the high latitudes of the northern hemisphere is closely related to the strength of the northern hemispheric annular mode. These results contribute to a better understanding of the influence of large‐ scale dynamics on tracer distributions. Citation: Jiang, X., M. T. Chahine, E. T. Olsen, L. L. Chen, and Y. L. The influence of tropospheric biennial oscillation on mid‐tropospheric CO2

[1] Mid‐tropospheric CO2 retrieved from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) was used to investigate CO2 interannual variability over the Indo‐Pacific region. A signal with periodicity around two years was found for the AIRS mid‐tropospheric CO2 for the first time, which is related to the Tropospheric Biennial Oscillation (TBO) associated with the strength of the monsoon. During a strong (we...

Comparing Surface and Mid-Tropospheric CO2 Concentrations from Central U.S. Grasslands

Comparisons of eddy covariance (EC) tower measurements of CO2 concentration with mid-tropospheric observations from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) allow for evaluation of the rising global signal of this greenhouse gas in relation to surface carbon dynamics. Using an information theory approach combining relative entropy and wavelet multi-resolution analysis, this study has explored co...

Satellite remote sounding of mid-tropospheric CO2

[1] Human activity has increased the concentration of the earth’s atmospheric carbon dioxide, which plays a direct role in contributing to global warming. Mid-tropospheric CO2 retrieved by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder shows a substantial spatiotemporal variability that is supported by in situ aircraft measurements. The distribution of middle tropospheric CO2 is strongly influenced by surfac...

Influence of Droughts on Mid-Tropospheric CO2

Using CO2 data from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), it is found for the first time that the mid-tropospheric CO2 concentration is ~1 part per million by volume higher during dry years than wet years over the southwestern USA from June to September. The mid-tropospheric CO2 differences between dry and wet years are related to circulation and CO2 surface fluxes. During drought conditions...
